Haemimont Games and THQ Nordic released the “Legacy” trailer for Jagged Alliance 3. The trailer discusses the developers’ desire to create a new Jagged Alliance title with improved mechanics and gameplay while remaining familiar to fans of the legendary turn-based game series. Haemimont Games achieved this by bringing in series creator and designer Ian Corey to help with the writing, narrative and universe development of the game.

Jagged Alliance is a series of turn-based video games; The first installment was released in 1995 on MS-DOS, followed by Jagged Alliance 2 in 1999. While the series was commercially successful, a full-fledged third installment remained in development hell until THQ Nordic acquired the IP in 2015 and announced Jagged Alliance 3 in 2021.
Managed by Haemimont Games of Tropico, the core focus of the Jagged Alliance 3 development process is to ensure authenticity with the franchise’s legacy. The developer recruited series designer and designer Ian Currie to design and oversee the game’s writing, story, and dialogue. In turn, Carey recruited veteran writer and former colleague Dan McClure, came up with many ideas for missions and recurring Mercs, and overhauled the series’ conversation system:
One of my favorite features of the game is the chat system – the part of the game that allows players to interact with various NPCs (non-player characters) in the world. In Jagged Alliance 2, this feature was very limited – you could only choose a general ‘attitude’ (eg friendly, direct, threatening).
Jagged Alliance 3 features a robust conversation system that allows for a much more engaging role-playing experience, and will often involve the participation of some of your traders. This can range from simple comments to more helpful observations and different gameplay depending on the situation, adding to the replayability of the game. We iterated on the design until we were all happy with it and seeing it all come together was very satisfying. I’m very proud of what we’ve done here because it allows for so much more interaction between the player, the NPCs, and the mercs, and allows us to tell a much deeper story than in any previous Jagged Alliance game.
Jagged Alliance 3 is currently in development for a PC release later in 2023. Check out the game’s 2021 gameplay trailer, which includes an overview of its key mechanics as well as a stunning look at its visually stunning environments.
